The Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is examining the matter of granting observer status to Armenia and Sri Lanka, Cyril Barsky—Russian President’s Special Representative on SCO Affairs—told news reporters.
News.am informs he noted that Sri Lanka is presently SCO's dialogue partner and submitted an application for an observer’s status on the day before the summit in Beijing.
“Armenia likewise has submitted a formal application,” said Barsky, and added that the applications are being examined.
Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are included in SCO. Mongolia, India, Iran and Pakistan have a status of observer. Belarus and Sri Lanka have a status of a dialogue partner. During the summit in Beijing on June 6 Turkey also received such a status and Afghanistan received an observer’s status.
