Sundukyan Theatre actors were on the stage of the world known Globe Theatre on May 16 and 17. The Armenian actors were on the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre stage for the first time. Many of the festival participants were for the first time on this stage. “King John” performance was staged at Globe Theatre for the first time after Shakespeare.
Best 37 theatre troupes, including Gabriel Sundukyan National Academy Theatre, were chosen from 200 countries to participate in the annual Shakespeare Festival. The festival’s important condition was that each country should present Shakespeare’s plays in their native language.
“It was written in synopsis near the stage what the scene was about. I was looking at the audience. I don’t remember them looking at the synopsis, they were looking at the stage, then they said they understood everything,” the creative director of Gabriel Sundukyan National Academy Theatre Tigran Gasparyan said.
English prominent media have covered the performance of the Armenian theatre evaluating “King John” as one of the best.
Each actor will dream of performing on the stage of the world known Globe Theatre. Playing Shakespeare’s plays in his homeland is equally desired and demanding.
The reception of the audience had also inspired Armen Marutyan who played King John. He says there is such a good audience in Armenia, too.
In Armenia the premiere of “King John” will take place on June 20. The performance will be included in the theatre’s schedule.
