UEFA will not change the country for holding EURO-2012 championship. The organizing coordinator of EURO-2012 Michal Listkevich has announced that the final of the European football championship will be held in Kiev, according to the established plan, despite the recent events in Dnepropetrovsk , tert.am informs making a reference to ITAR-TASS.
To recall, 10 blasts took place in different parts of Denpropetrovsk leaving about 30 people injured.
“I was informed that UEFA doesn’t even theoretically consider the issue of changing the place for holding the championship,” he has said adding that if some political figures don’t attend the matches, it will not have great significance.
“The football players and the fans are the most important. We have worked well and we intend to ensure high level organization of the championship,” the website of Ukraine-2012 information center quoted Lastkevich as saying.
The idea of changing the place for holding championship emerged because of Ukraine’s former prime minister Yulia Timoshenko’s beating, who is sentenced to imprisonment, and because of the terrorist acts in Dnepropetrovsk. To recall, Yulia Timoshenko was beaten by the prison coworkers on her way from the prison to hospital, because of which she lost her consciousness.
High ranking officials of a number of European countries, including the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso have refused to attend the matches, in that way expressing their complaint against beating Timoshenko.
The championship will be held on June 8 through July 1 in the Ukraine and Poland.
