US President Barack Obama who visited the Holocaust Museum one day before the Armenian Genocide anniversary, announced about awarding a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom to Jan Karski, a former officer in the Polish Underground during World War II who survived the Holocaust.
The medal is given to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace.
Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Executive Director Aram Hamparian issued the following statement on April 23 in response to President Barack Obama’s remarks.
“President Obama undermined his own commitment to ‘Never Again’ in his speech at the U.S. Holocaust Museum this morning, when, on the day before the annual commemoration marking the Armenian Genocide—the atrocities that Hitler himself referenced prior to launching the Holocaust,” stated Hamparian adding though the President spoke about several historical events but bypassed the Armenian Genocide, a crime, which Barack Obama, as the US president, had continuously promised to recognise. He had the chance at the Holocaust Museum.
